Medication policy for travelling abroad

For travelling abroad either 28 or 56 days’ supply will be given. Where the patient is stable on long term treatment and the GP feels it is clinically appropriate, 84 days may be issued. Exceptions would include Oral Contraceptive Pill, Hormone Replacement Therapy and Thyroxine which may be prescribed for longer periods.

Schedule 2 and 3 controlled drugs (CDs) will be limited to a maximum supply of 30 days.

The NHS accepts responsibility for supplying ongoing medication for temporary periods abroad of up to 3 months, so patients who are leaving the country can be supplied with a script up to 3 months maximum, including any prescription for anti-malarials. Patients attempting to contact us from abroad should be advised to seek local advice in all cases.
